There are stirrings of a revolution in mental health – and we are so excited about it as we have personal experience of people who find themselves apparently condemned to a lifetime on powerful pharmaceutical drugs with a range of negative side effects. Whilst we recognise the importance of these options to those in crisis, it is past time that natural ways to heal the mind rather than over-medicalisation of problems are explored and made available.
In particular, we are thrilled that Professor Julia Rucklidge, a renowned psychologist from New Zealand, is coming to London to share her knowledge of the pathways connecting nutrition and mental health, and her experience in using micronutrients to treat disorders. She will give a talk that is described as intending “to challenge our current treatment regime for mental disorders and suggest one alternative course of action”.
As a clinical psychologist, Prof Rucklidge undertook her own research as a post-doctoral study of mental health among children at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, and was concerned at the failure of treatment to help many of these seriously ill youngsters. She has spent a decade running clinical trials on the effectiveness of using micronutrient formulas for mental health after the Canterbury earthquakes in New Zealand, and has become a leading advocate of this method.
Julia has over 100 peer reviewed publications and book chapters, has been frequently featured in the media, and has given invited talks all over the world on her work on nutrition and mental health. She was the recipient of the Ballin Award 2015 from the NZ Psychologist Society, an award that recognises notably significant contributions to the development or enhancement of clinical psychology. She was named in the top 100 Most Influential Women in New Zealand.
You can view her 2014 TEDx talk, which has had close to 1m viewings, here
