Herb of the Month : Hibiscus flower

Posted on July 24th, 2016

hibiscus-herb-400x400I love the beautiful flowers of the hibiscus plant, especially when we are in Gozo on one of our retreats. It truly makes one feel its summer.

It turns out that the Hibiscus flower has a long reputation going back to India and Ancient Egypt as a healing herb.  It also makes its appearance in many ancient myths, usually associated with love magic in some way.  In Polynesia, for example, a woman wearing the flower behind her left ear indicates that you are in a love relationship with a man.

Not only associated with lowering high blood pressure, according to numerous studies, flavonoids and other compounds found in the hibiscus plant help to counteract bloating of the stomach. They appear to do so by influencing how aldosterone, the hormone that regulates the balance of water and electrolytes, affects the body. As a friend says “Enjoy a cup of hibiscus tea and watch your pooch slowly–but surely–deflate.”

We have organic loose leaf Hibiscus Tea 250g on sale this month on the RandRme site, so that you can enjoy this pleasant tasting Vitamin C rich beverage either made with hot water, or allowed to cool as a refreshing long summer drink over some ice….

And read here for some great information on a whole range of herbal teas, how to make them, and why…
