Robin and I greatly enjoyed meeting the editor of fab raw food magazine Funky Raw while we were in London last weekend – over a wonderful lunch at the new restaurant ‘Tanya’s’ in South Kensington. Based in the Chelsea myhotel – itself very innovative with its crystals and florals, and bee sanctuary on the roof – the raw food café caters for a buzzy crowd of Londoners who are obviously taking to having health and deliciousness served up on a plate!
Rob tucked into a mountain of Thai Curry Noodles, Robin loved the Lasagne which was very creamy and I tried the Pad Thai which was really tasty. The ‘piece de resistance’ for me
was the Key Lime Tart (I ate most of Robin’s!). We were lucky as it was the last slice – most of the desserts had sold out, unsurprisingly! A challenge for a raw food restaurant is that everything needs to be super-fresh, so this was a good sign. We asked how a place like that survives in Chelsea, and were glad to hear that ‘We’re getting busier and busier – especially at lunchtime.’ The menu Tanya’s menu covers everything from breakfast – such as a Caramel Chia porridge and Rawtella Untoast – which sounded delicious, to a full menu of main courses such as Lasagne, Thai Curry Noodles and a selection of salads, Tacos and Pad Thai. She also offers great juices, smoothies, milks and sumptuous cocktails for the evening. The staff are lovely and most helpful.
Tanya’s story In 1988, whilst living in New Zealand, Tanya broke her back in a near-fatal car accident, and badly damaged all her internal organs. After surgery, she was left with a plate and four screws holding her spine together, hideous scars and a body brace. She had started to explore different diets – she came from a traditional Russian family for whom meat was essential – when her parents stepped in. They went all the way to a raw food festival in Arizona to meet a fellow Russian – no less than Victoria Boutenko herself. They returned transformed. ‘They had both lost weight, their skin was glowing, they looked younger and they were truly so radiant, it was so beautiful.’ This was the start of Tanya’s exploration of living food and hence she found her calling Tanya’s Cafe – myhotel, 35 Ixworth Place London SW3 3QX 0207 225 7538 www.tanyascafe.com
